In 1955 the West Suburban Youth Orchestra was founded in the Hinsdale area to provide a musical opportunity for youth throughout the western suburbs of Chicago. This non-profit music program is designed to develop the young musician's ensemble ability. It is comprised of two orchestras: the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Sinfonia Orchestra.
The
Philharmonic Orchestra is a full orchestra comprised of young musicians who are serious about their music and
would like a challenging experience playing the works of classical orchestra repertoire.
The Sinfonia Orchestra
is a preparatory orchestra for the young musician who, with more experience will have the opportunity to progress
to the Concert Orchestra.
Students are admitted to one of these two ensembles based on their ability and playing experience after successful auditions. There are usually three concert performances each year in area high schools or colleges. These concerts are open to the general public.
